LEIGH HILBERT HAWAIIAN LAVA PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK : Ho'ohanohano Pele (Honoring the volcano goddess Pele) Published December 11th, 2008 (October, 2009-- "Hi Leigh, I just received your book and after having looked thru it, I can truthfully say that it's everything and more than you describe. The pictures are so overwhelming and powerful and your descriptions are beautiful. I'm very pleased with this purchase and would recommend your work to anyone. Have a great day... Donna") This book is an extensive & varied collection of active lava photos I have taken in or near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park over the past ten years; most of the photos were taken from August to December 2008. To view the book click on the link below. On there, if you click on the 'Preview Book' item you will get to see ONLY the first 15 pages... many great images further along in the book :). There are 56 color photos, most of which cover a full page. The book also includes an Artist Statement and a page dedicating the book to my dad, who passed away May 14th, 2008. On ‘dust jacket’ versions there is also an artist biography. Note: hardcover books with the dust jacket have no other cover images on the book itself, but the dust jacket front & back book cover photos are stronger & brighter due to the different printing technique. Conversely, hardcover books without the dust jacket have full cover images front & back. All photos are titled. I have reviewed copies of this hardcover 11x13-inch book, both with and without the dust jacket and they look really great! (When I pulled my first copies of this book out of the box while waiting in the Christmas post office lineup in Pahoa, everyone near me asked where they could buy their copy as they passed it along for all to look at!) Bookbindings are strong and well made; the Premium Papers make for durable page-turning. My book price in Blurbs Bookstore is simply 30% over Blurbs charges to produce it. (They do not take a cut in sales)… Yes it is a bit pricey, but I assure you this is one unique book and you will be really happy with it. This is the best book quality level Blurb produces. Surfing Hurricane Flossie Hawaii Aug 14, 2007 : As Hurricane Flossie approached the Island of Hawaii it generated some nice surfing waves. The hurricane disintegrated as it reached the island but we had some fun with her for a few days. These two pro's and their jet ski teams put on a great show for both the media and us locals on the beach-- thanks guys! ****I am sorry I forgot to get the names of these two surfers and their tow-in teams. 44th Merrie Monarch Hula Festival Hilo Hawaii Night Hoiki-- -- Gallery Four -- Halau Na Mamo O Pu`uanahulu -- Sonny Ching : A wonderful peformance by this dance troupe and kumu Sonny Ching. * 4-pages with 51 images of this halau in this gallery. *** Note: Do to rules at the hula performances, camera flash was not allowed, therefore all the Merrie Monarch photos were taken with just stage lighting and at 800 ISO, which means some graininess and pixelation, and in some of the action shots a little blurring may appear in the larger prints like 20X30-inches. 44th Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival Hawaii: Gallery - Three { Te Wharekura Kuapapa Maori a Roheo Rakaumanga : From Aotearoa, or New Zealand: Haka (Fierce waring style) performance: Te Wharekura Kuapapa Maori a Roheo Rakaumanga - Lead by Dave Rawiri Thompson, these are world champions that won the Matatini Festival. Ten of these dancers were also featured in the wonderful movie 'Whale Rider'. *Nine-Pages here. This dance troupe were very vibrant and exciting to witness. 44th Merrie Monarch Hula Festival Hilo Hawaii -- Gallery Two-- Halau Hula `o Mehanaokala from Tokyo Japan April 11, 2007 : This large hula troupe of 60 dancers, with their thrilling mix of Hawaiian and Tahitian dances put on quite a variety of costumes and were a lot of fun to watch. This halau is lead by kumu hula Kuuleinani Hashimoto. Hula is enormously popular in Japan. **10- pages of images. ***These photos will print nicely but keep in mind they were taken without a flash, as required, therefore most images contain a grainy or slightly pixelated look to them if blown up to large prints—but even then they look good. The print sizes offered on the purchase pages directly reflect the original quality of my photos: larger sizes offered indicate more pixels, each vary with resolution. . The Pro-lab we use does an excellent job on all printing and will rectify any errors at no cost should there be any, which is extremely rare. For PRINTS ONLY: "Prints categories:" The main things to be aware of with this are: ‘STANDARD’ - For photo paper prints. -- I usually only offer 'Lustre' paper prints. Coqui Frogs Hawaii : The coqui are a new species to Hawaii and driving us all crazy as they rapidly spread from mountain to sea. They hitchhiked to Hawaii on plants in the mid-nineties. They also cling to cars and hitchhike to new locations, accelerating their spread throughout the Islands. Most chirping is at night. They will enter homes if windows are open. The frogs suck air into a belly air sac before placing it into their throat sac for each piercingly shrill 90-decibel mating call. The strange thing is, even while watching these frogs closely, we cannot tell where the sound comes out of them; their mouth remains closed before, during and after the call. Only the males chirp like this.
